University of Essex – Colchester Campus

 The University of Essex Colchester campus is located at the outskirts of Colchester City and accessible from the city via shuttle bus S1 or walking (30-40 minutes). The company First bus provides bus routes S1 (shuttle) and 87 that direct link between the University campus and Colchester City Centre. 

The university is also accessible walking from the town of Wivenhoe, following the riverside of the river Colne.

Colchester is very well connected with London with frequent trains (4 times per hour) from London Liverpool Street, with a fastest travel of 43 min, and average of 57 min. The closest airport to Colchester is Stansted Airport. A direct bus departs from Stansted Airport to Colchester town centre every hour for around £7, the duration of the journey is about 1h.  There is also a direct bus from Heathrow Airport to Colchester town centre with services around every hour. The travel journey by bus from Heathrow is 2h 40m. Another way to get to Colchester from Heathrow Airport is by the Elizabeth line until London Liverpool Street then take the train to Colchester from there. For directions from other Airports, the best is to get to Liverpool Street station in London and then from there to Colchester.

Greater Anglia provides frequent trains from London Liverpool Street to Colchester (also known as Colchester North). London Liverpool Street has a direct link to Stansted Airport as well as Underground and bus services for travel from and to Gatwick and Heathrow Airports.

The train journey from Liverpool Street takes just under an hour and you can get a direct bus or taxi from the station to us. Our nearest station is Hythe (Essex) which is a 20-minute walk from campus, train services to this station are less frequent.

By Plane

London Stansted Airport

Our Colchester Campus is not far from Stansted Airport. The quickest way to travel is by National Express using the 250 service which runs directly to and from our campus. Alternatively, there is a local bus 133 to Colchester city centre, but this can take longer and you will need to get a bus or taxi from the city to campus.

London Heathrow Airport

If you are arriving at Heathrow, the best option is to get the National Express coach service which runs to and from our Colchester Campus. But if you can’t do this, then you’ll need to take a train from Heathrow (all terminals) to London Liverpool Street and then another train to Colchester. Heathrow and London Liverpool Street station are directly and fastly connected via the Elizabeth Line and Heathrow Express (to Paddington and from there, change to Elizabeth Line)  Once in Colchester, you can get a bus, or taxi to the campus. 

London Gatwick Airport

There are regular train services from Gatwick to London Liverpool Street Station. You’ll then need to take another train to Colchester. Once in Colchester, you can get a bus, or taxi to the campus.

London Luton airport

If you are arriving at London Luton airport, the best option is to get the National Express coach. But, if you can’t do this then you will need to take a train from Luton to London Liverpool Street and then another train to Colchester. Once in Colchester, you can get a bus, or taxi to the campus. 

Taxis

There is a taxi rank at Colchester North Train Station and in the city centre (High Street). There is a taxi stand just at the exit of Colchester North train station. The journey to the University normally takes about 10-20 minutes.

Colchester Campus is well served by local taxi companies in Colchester.

There are also AirBnB accomodations available in Wivenhoe and Colchester. For Airbnb in Colchester recommended neighbourhoods are the ‘Hythe’, ‘High Street’ or ‘Colchester Town’.

Colchester is well and frequently connected via train with London (London Liverpool Street), so if you are or want to stay in London, it should be possible to commute on the day. First train from London to Colchester is at 03:43 AM and the last train from Colchester to London at 23:03. If you wish to stay at the social on September 14, you could leave via taxi to Colchester North Train station at around 22:15 to catch the last train.
